Your home can work for you...

Luckily when my husband had his stroke, we owned a condo in Fountain Hills, Arizona that had wide doorways which helped getting around much easier. We did order ramps, Brand/Manufacturer: Pride Mobility

to be able to go out over the threshold of the sliding glass door and the garage inside door. We ordered them in various sizes.

One of the great finds was a ramp that the movers use Wyse Industrial www.wyseCarts.com 419-923-7353, This will get you up most one step porches. Has a handle on it and is easy to transport to other homes with a one-step entry.

When we first went back to Wisconsin to our lake home, I ordered a ramp to rent that could have been a problem. It was very steep, always remember to have it as a gradual ramp.

At the condo we also had a contractor who came to dig out the bottom of the shower so we could have it as a roll in shower.

This was well worth the cost and we happened to have travertine in the shower, a new border was added, and everything looked great.

After living in the condo and finally selling our lake home we ventured out to purchase a new home for us. We have an amazing realtor, Jon Musa, he had found this house and suggested I drive by it. I did and said to Jon, “It is ugly!” He finally convinced us to go and see it. We needed to enter through the pool area with the wheelchair. We noticed that we enjoyed the backyard, and we could have the home with wide hallways remodeled to work with our disabled lifestyle.

Roll in shower was added. New kitchen with the wheelchair able to get around the island along with maintenance free flooring, a couple walls taken down.

We are enjoying our home and plan to be here a long time.

We were leaving for a trip while they were doing the remodel and I asked our contractor, “Right now Curly will need to enter through the garage is there something we could do so he could use the wide front door?” His response was, “go and look at my driveway, I have pavers and we can add some fill for the four-inch incline, and it will not look like a handicap home.” Problem solved.

No one notices when they come to our front door that the 4-inch-high landing is gone, and I think this is a safer solution for anyone.

4" landing - gone

I noticed after living here that we needed a spot for Curly to do his therapy at home. Where did I put it? Made our own art in our family room.

Mounted a piece of wood and put a grab bar on it. Fits the décor and makes his homework easier for him.

We also added a therapy bed in our 3rd stall in the garage. No reason for slacking...

Our lives have changed...our homes have changed...our cars have changed...but we both feel this change is now good. We still have a wonderful family and we work hard and we play hard!

Bloom where you are planted!

Hint...put a lockbox outside and give the code to the EMS if they every need to come in, your door will be in one piece...
